Top Twenty Gifts for 2008!

Well folks...you've been waiting sooooo patiently...the Top 20 Gifts for the 2008 holiday season are up LIVE on my site! View all the wonderful products that I had the privledge of reviewing this year at www.thegifttherapist.com/top20.html Because I could only recommend items that I actually received samples of, this year's list is definitely short on gifts for guys, but I promise I will feature individual products on my blog as I am made aware of them well before the holiday season, so stay tuned! It was so difficult cutting the list down to twenty products... This is only the beginning! Have fun and shop your heart out! Not only are these great products but the folks behind them are fantastic as well. No affiliate commissions here, folks...just my honest endorsement! Now I must go thank my hubby for the awesome design work he's done for me...LOL! Happy Giving!

Enusual: A Social Network for Bargain Shoppers

How cool is this? A new site dedicated to bringing savvy shoppers together to help each other find the best bargains. Wish I would have thought of that! The site is www.enusual.com and they just launched on September 28th. It looks like they are already having great success. The site is free and very easy to navigate. Not a lot of bells and whistles...I love that! Even more, I love this little blurb they post on their "About" page:

Ps: Imagine all the money that we can save members in a year! We invite you to consider donating a small portion of what we help you save to your favorite charity. Of course this is completely optional. The formula would look like this: 1) Have fun saving money at Enusual, 2) Donate some of your savings to charity, 3) Claim your charitable donations as a tax deduction -- and pay less tax.
I plan to join and contribute to the conversation...and I just may learn a thing or two in the process! Check them out! Happy Giving

The Spirit of Giving

I know there are many of you out there who are grappling with the current state of economic affairs. It is a scary time, folks...and we are all in this together. Today I watched retirement fund plummet over 5k. That's a lot of money to lose when you don't have a paying job at the moment...hiring, anyone? LOL! I just feel compelled to encourage everyone to keep on giving. Not only through tangible gifts, but through your time, attention and compassion. This is a time when we all should be reaching out to each other, sharing laughter, recalling fond memories, and baring our souls. Isn't that what's most important anyway? So when times are especially tough, like now...GIVE MORE! Hanging onto the fear of financial loss will only isolate us and create a new kind of poverty that can't be measured in US dollars. Look deep within yourself and give what it is you wish to receive...and reconnect to the spirit of giving that, I believe, can one day change the world. Happy Giving!

The Perfect Gift for the Music Fan

Sure to be a hit with the music fan in your life, these awesome coasters are each created from an original vintage record, which has been trimmed to frame the label with a thin ring of black vinyl. Each coaster is double-sided (as were records) and laminated to protect the labels from moisture and to prevent scuffs on furniture. The coaster sets are comprised of six assorted vintage record labels and packed in a clear round box. Assorted labels only (sorry, no choice of artist or genre).

Hug Your Kids Today

I would like to introduce you to a wonderful book written by my new friend, Michelle Nichols. Her new book, "Hug Your Kids Today" is a unique, inspiring, and creative gift that I hope you will add to your gift list this holiday season. The focus of the Hug Your Kids Today project is simple - to encourage all working mothers and fathers to forget the crazy idea of "work-life balance," Instead, we recommend you prioritize and put your "family first and work a close second." This book is for professional working parents with school-aged children. It focuses on five key lessons about working, parenting and life that author Michelle Nichols learned in the last 10 years since the sudden death of her son, Mark, at age 8 ½ years old from brain cancer. The lessons include the importance of hugs, seeing the positive, laughter, faith, and daily hugs. Readers have said the book made them laugh, cry and think. Visit www.hugyourkidstoday.com for the full story and ordering information. Complete with Michelle's autograph for only $17.95 with FREE Shipping in the US. Happy Giving!

Happy Birthday to the Gift Therapist

No, not Jennifer...the Gift Therapist! Exactly one year ago today, the Gift Therapist website went live and the concept of Giveology was launched. Athough it wasn't called Giveology at the time, I believe that the Gift Therapist concept became successful, not only because of the bargain hunting ideas, but for the consistent focus on giving...a verb that embodies action, thoughtfulness and compassion. We've come a long way, baby! And I thank each and every one of you out there for contributing to the success!

One year ago, I never dreamed that one day I would be considered an expert source on gift giving. But today the media, newspapers and magazines think so. Look for the Gift Therapist's advice this fall in holiday editions of Woman's Day Magazine, Real Simple, and your local Sunday paper's holiday gift guide inserts. Creator's News Service put the Gift Therapist on the front page! (click HERE to see!) This is very humbling for someone who, one year ago, didn't know the power of the Internet, let alone how to connect with the folks who could launch a new career. There is no turning back now...it's full steam ahead!

Thanks again to everyone...Your continued support and encouragement have been the best gift ever! Happy Giving!

Surviving the Storm: A Personal Perspective

Every now and then I feel it helpful to throw in my two cents regarding the state of affairs, in this case the economic crisis. Because I am an optomist, I believe that we all must pay attention and find the lessons that we can learn from all of this turmoil and apply those lessons to our own lives...and wallets! Although I promote "giving more" I fear I don't put enough emphasis on the gifts that can't be bought.

While watching David Blaine last night (yes, I'm a huge magic freak!) he spoke of his mother who had worked three jobs to support him while growing up. She was a single mother and unfortunately, passed away and never got to see his successes first hand. But what he was grateful for, he said, was that she never gave him things..."she gave me the gift of her"...her continued unconditional support allowed him to believe he could do anything. Her nurturing and inspiring spirit led David along a remarkable path of committment, stamina, and passion. That is pretty powerful stuff...

So when you take out your checkbook and examine your financial situation before you embark on your holiday shopping spree this year, just remember that there is NOTHING that you can BUY that could even come close to giving the gift of YOU this year. Whatever form that takes, it can have miraculous and "magical" results. Happy Gifting!

How to Cut Your Gift List Without the Guilt

I received an email from a reader who asked a very timely question that I feel you all may benefit from. Here is a summary of her question:
"Dear GT...I really hope you can help me. I took your advice and made out my gift list early and I was shocked to see that I have over 40 people on my list! There is NO WAY I can afford to buy gifts for all of these people...and the truth is that I am tired of putting in time and money on many of which I rarely see or have a genuine relationship with! But I do feel a bit guilty and was wondering what I could do to soften the blow and clear my conscience when the holiday season arrives. Any advice would be greatly appreciated."

Does this question resonate with any of you out there? These are financially scary times folks and fortunately, I have a few tips that can help you with this dilema:
  • Based on your holiday gift budget, take out your list and assign a dollar amount to each person on your list. Carve out $20 or so for emergency gifts that you may need to buy at the last minute. This could also include unexpected costs of postage, supplies, or pantry items needed for gifts that you can make at home. Start with the most important people that you would like to recognize with a gift and STOP when you have reached your budget limit.
  • Can you consolidate your gifting into family gifts rather than individual gifts? Adjust your budget accordingly...maybe you can slip one or two extra people back in!
  • The folks who didn't make it in under the budget limit are unfortunately the ones you will have to cut or really get creative with later (ie. homeade gifts, gifts from your kitchen, coupons for services, etc)
  • Contact the people who didn't make the cut as early as possible and tell them the truth! There is no shame in admitting that you are on a tight budget this year. They may welcome this conversation and be relieved! If you only speak to them once or twice per year, have grown apart, or are buying holiday gifts out of habit, now is your opportunity to stop this obligatory gift giving. Chances are pretty good that they feel the exact same way but don't know how to approach the subject either...be the hero! And suggest one of the following alternatives...

If you find that you must cut out some very special people on your list, to help eliminate the guilt, why not suggest one of the following ideas:

  • Host a holiday brunch "pot-luck style" where everyone brings something for the menu.
  • Create a new holiday tradition! Go to the movies, visit a museum, create a scrapbook together, or have a girls nite in...Spending quality time together is one of the greatest gifts of all!
  • Host a "top secret swap night" after the holiday and bring all the gifts that you do not wish to keep or can't return. Perhaps you can donate a few items to your favorite charities while you are at it!

Just remember, only you know what you can responsibly spend this year for the upcoming holiday season. Going into to credit card debt will only hurt you and make matters worse over time. So do your best to give the best you can with what you got...and never forget the gift of you is the best gift ever!

The Gift of Grace

This weekend I had a life-changing moment that, initially, could have been interpreted as awful. It happened on Saturday evening when visiting the South Side of Pittsburgh. My husband and I were off to meet friends at a local restaurant for drinks and unwind after a very long day. We parked on a dark side street where we luckily found a decent spot rather close to the venue. As I exited the car, I saw a man flat on his back right in the middle of the sidewalk...he was not moving...he was alone...and no one was stopping to help. So then I did the craziest thing. I did not panic...I calmly told my husband to dial 911 and approached the ailing gentleman to see if he was OK. He was breathing and staring blindly up into the sky...again, I did not panic. I began to speak with him and held his hand. I told him I would not let go or leave him until help arrived. He faded in and out of consciousness until the ambulance finally made it to the scene...and then it was all over. The medics waved us away and assured us he would be taken care of. It was very hard to walk away...I just can't explain it in words.

The moral of the story? The Lord empowered me to do something that I normally would have considered crazy! After all, it was dark, late at night and rather scary! This could have been a set-up and my life could have been in jeopardy...but those thoughts never entered my mind! I was blessed with God's grace to do what He needed me to do. At some point during my conversations with this gentleman (I couldn't understand his speech, but I really tried) he smiled, laughed, and cried many times. Those moments were so raw and real...what a gift! I feel so blessed to have been the chosen one to be there at his side. I'll never forget it...

The Perfect Party Favor

Giving the best doesn't always come as a bargain, but I can't overlook this wonderful gift idea from the folks at Mrs. Prindables. I LOVE their gourmet apples and can honestly say I've never had one that has ever come close in quality, taste and giveability. Sometimes I get lucky and find them at a huge discount at our local TJ Maxx...so check there often, especially around the holiday. Here is a set of 12 Tuxedo chocolate apples for $89.95. If you are hosting or attending a dinner party, walk in with these and you'll have everyone on their feet..and licking their fingers! This set would also be fantastic for wedding party gifts or shower favors, don't you think? Who doesn't love an edible favor these days? I promise, these favors won't be left on the table! Guard them with your life, girls :) Good luck and happy gifting!

Make Gift Giving Fun: Make it Funny!

I love to make gift giving fun...especially for co-workers and close friends who share my warped sense of humor. Some of the best and most affordable gag gifts can be found online at fun little store called thinkgeek. I stumbled upon this site a few years ago when I heard about a product that I had to have...caffeinated soap! Not only did I find the soap, but also the whole gamut of caffeine related products for the "always sleepy" friend or office mate...LOL! Here's my new favorite. It's called the Anoy-a-tron...here's the description:

The Annoy-a-tron generates a short (but very annoying, hence the name) beep every few minutes. Your unsuspecting target will have a hard time 'timing' the location of the sound because the beeps will vary in intervals ranging from 2 to 8 minutes. The 2kHz sound is generically annoying enough, but if you really really want to aggravate somebody, select the 12 kHz sound.
3 simple steps.
Turn on.*
Hide it.
Muahahaha...

Assuming you have done your part in selecting a suitable hiding location for the Annoy-a-tron, it will do its part to drive your co-workers slowly mad with its short and seemingly random beeps. And when someone does locate the Annoy-a-tron, they're really not going to know what it is - which is almost as much fun as watching them search for it.

Well worth $9.99 don't ya think? Do a coupon code search over at www.ratherbeshopping.com for more secret savings. Don't forget to check out their clearance section, too...more great practical jokes to keep you laughing all year long! Click the logo below to start shopping now!

Shop the Unexpected

In the upcoming month you will be bombarded with television, print, and radio ads promoting the best holiday shopping bargains in your neck of the woods. Mark my words, the retailers are going to get wise to my advice and launch big sales earlier this year. Case in point, today I had to make a pit-stop at my local Rite-Aid Store to pick up a greeting card. Would you believe that all of their fall decor is 50% off already? Our local dollar store has Christmas decorations up! Retailers want you to buy and buy now...so get ready for the onslaught of early holiday ads. I have a hunch that some stores may skip the fall and Thanksgiving decor all together! But I digress. Because I was already inside Rite-Aid with my debit card, I figured I'd take advantage of the 50% autumn merchandise sale and load up on some candles and diffusers in neutral scents like vanilla and creme brulee. I can easily use them as accent gifts for some of my holiday gift baskets this year. I was very impressed with both the quality and selection and would definitely shop there again for a thoughtful and affordable gift. So the next time you find yourself with the sniffles and need to visit your local drug store, take an extra $10 and knock off some premeditated holiday shopping as well. Happy Gifting!

Speaking of candles, this high quality, hand-poured soy candle will stir up warm, nostalgic, gingerbread-scented holiday memories. Available in nifty 16 and 8 ounce steel paint cans. Burn times of 160 and 80 hours, respectively.
