Greetings from the White House

From Angela Watson (www.YourPersonalPoster.com) comes another great gift idea for the budget-challenged (although it won't work for Christmas, as more lead time is required):
When family members cross over the magic octogenarian line (turn 80), or celebrate a 50th anniversary or higher, they are eligible to receive congratulations from the president and it includes a super cool certificate (nice for framing). If you know of anyone in the family getting ready to have a birthday anywhere north of the 80 mile marker or celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary, then send your request in now (if you don't mind having a Bush signature) or wait until we have someone else in office early next year.
White House Greeting Request info can be accessed here: https://app1.whitehouse.gov/greetings/home
Please note the following guidelines:
1. U.S. CITIZENS. The White House will send greetings only to United States citizens
.
2. REQUIRED INFORMATION. Please provide the following information when making your request:
1. Name of honoree(s)
2. Address of honoree(s)
3. Form of address (Mr., Mrs., Ms., Miss)
4. Date (month, day, year) of birth, birthday, wedding, or anniversary
5. Requestor's name and daytime phone number
3. NUMBER OF REQUESTS LIMITED. The number of requests you can submit per day is limited. Institutional requests for multiple greetings must be submitted by fax or mail on official letterhead with the required information listed above.
4. WHEN TO EXPECT YOUR GREETING. For birthdays and anniversaries, greetings will be mailed from the White House approximately 14 days prior to the event. But please submit your request 6 weeks prior to the date needed.
5. PROBLEMS USING THE WEBSITE. If you experience problems making an online request, please make your request by fax or mail.

What to buy for the person who has everything?

Every now and then I get the privledge to review and recommend a product that really knocks me off my feet. And www.MyFaceIcons.com is definitely one of them! Leslie and the folks over at Leading Edge Gifts whipped up this little avatar for me and I absolutely love it! The process was quick, simple and very pleasant. I feel like I received a face lift for free :) Isn't the detail just amazing? What a great gift idea for someone who already has everything! The icons would make perfect gifts for friends and family and certainly will not break your budget. A basic icon is only $39 and a premium (like mine) is only $49. You can view all of their options by following this link: www.myfaceicons.com/eShop/10browse.asp I think you'll be very impressed!

In addition to myfaceicons.com, Leading Edge Gifts also has three other sites where you can find:

And best yet, their "Believe" collection donates 20% of the purchase price to the LUNGevity Foundation and the Breast Cancer Fund. Lost Season 5 Official Promo Trailer

So what does the TV series LOST have to do with bargain shopping? Absolutely nothing! But from a gift giving perspective, it's a perfect fit. LOST is my all time favorite television series. I am addicted and can't get enough of the message boards, theories, and spoilers that keep me connected in between very long seasons. I am in LOST withdrawl and can't wait for the premier in early 2009. My husband and I have our fair share of memoribilia from the show including mugs, tshirts, and production scripts. A Hurley action figure with replica lottery ticket rounds out our collection very nicely. Last year I bought some of my best friends signed production scripts of the pilot episodes from Grey's Anatomy, Hero's and the Office. Since they were huge fans, these gifts went over EXTREMELY well! So if you are stuck on a gift idea for a good friend or family member, why not investigate their favorite movies, TV series, or band and build a theme gift around it? If you start your research early you may just find that perfect gift! Happy Giving!

And for my fellow LOST fans, here's ABC's official trailer for Season 5...Yipee!

Save Money by Shopping Backwards

Contrary to most holiday shopping advice, I am a firm believer in shopping for the small stuff first. Most folks buy the "big stuff" first and plan to use what is left on the smaller gifts on their lists. Nine times out of ten this shopping strategy will fail! Of course we want to make sure that the most important people on our list get the most fantastic gifts, but this technique can end up costing you more on the smaller gifts (because you wait 'til the last minute and overspend), or worse, you scratch the little gifts off you list all together.

If you haven't made you gift list and prepared your holiday budget, please do that ASAP! Begin thinking of "gift themes" for gift recipients and keep your eyes open for those diamonds in the rough that you find on the clearance racks. Gifts for your ladies club, church group, children's teachers can easily come in under $10 or less with a little planning. Make a game out of it! Set a $10 budget limit and do your best to come in under budget. Then allocate all the money you save toward your larger purchases or favorite charity! Here are some tricks that I have learned to help cut my holiday giving budget in half:
  • Set a spending limit for everyone on your holiday list and stick to it! As a matter of fact, challenge yourself to come in under budget!
  • Only use cash! Keep a gift giving wallet with $10 cash with you at all times. You never know where you may find the perfect gift at a deep discount.
  • Consider group gifts rather than individual gifts. Give one larger gift for an entire office, family or organization to enjoy. This can easily be done for under $20 if you plan ahead!
  • Experiment with homemade gifts. Hone you novice baking skills in the months leading up to the holidays. Food gifts make wonderful gifts for families, the hostess, or your favorite service professional. Save a ton of money by making the cookies, dips, pies, etc. yourself!
  • Save money on the wrapping by using brown paper lunch bags or recycled brown grocery bags. Jazz them up with spray glitter, raffia ribbon or a colorful yarn that you have in your craft bin.

Remember, the goal is to focus on the giving rather than the gift! Good luck and happy giving!

Beware of the Stocking Stuffers!

Ok..that sounds a bit harsh. But stocking stuffers can really bust your budget if you are not careful. Why? Because we often scramble around at the last minute to fill them up! My mother told me stories of how her Christmas stocking was always stuffed with fresh fruit and a homemade popcorn ball. For years, I got the glorious popcorn ball as well...and loved it! Today, manufacturers are toting high end items as stocking stuffers in effort to get you to spend over your limit...they want you to spend more! Don't fall for it! Sorry folks, a high-end MP3 player or tech gadget is NOT a stocking stuffer...it is a major gift! In my opinion, you can create an awesome holiday stocking on a budget of $10 or less if you just re-think the contents! Here are my ideas for a fabulously filled stocking without the budget busting price tag. Don't forget to choose a theme...it will help you create your gift list and stick to your budget:
  • Fresh fruits
  • Homemade snacks like seasoned pretzles or granola mixes
  • Clearance cosmetic items like nailpolish or lip balms
  • Travel kits and accessories
  • Costume jewelry found on clearance at your favorite discount department store
  • Fun and funky notecards with matching pens (The Dollar Store)
  • Holiday DVD's or CD's (Try Big Lots!)
  • Gourmet drink mixes like tea, coffee, or herbal teas
  • Fun sized candies

What are you putting in holiday stockings this year?

Gifts that Give Back: The Alzheimer's Foundation of America

At first glance, this sterling jewelry set just blew me away. I personally love abstract art, but the message behind the design is humbling and inspiring. Shop the store at the Alzheimer's Foundation of America and help them support the programs and services of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and its member organizations. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America hopes to raise awareness and enhance knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses, and further its mission of providing optimal care to those affected by dementia.

Definitely a gift that gives back, and one of my favorite girlfriend gifts for 2008! The necklace is $30 and the bracelet is $20. Go take a look and help the Foundation fight this scary, stressful, and often misunderstood disease. Happy Giving! http://www.alzfdn.org/AFAStore/estore.html

Thank You CharleeKatz!

Are these not the cutest hats you have ever seen???
Many thanks to Alison and the folks at www.charleekatz.com I met Alison online when I was seeking donations for my favorite charity, the Black Pants Project. I now have three gift sets made up of hats and scarves to raffle off in support of this awesome program...YAY! They are absolutely stunning and I had to share them with you all! The little flowers are sold separately for $8.00, so if you can't afford the set, go for the accessory instead! All products are made of 100% chenille yarn...they won't squish your hair and are amazingly soft:) Be sure to check out the Mommy and Me Gift Set. Yes, a bit pricey, but well worth the splurge for a special new mom on your list! Good luck and Happy Giving!

From the Mailbag: Great Gift Idea!

Here is a perfect example of how you can put great fun and meaning into a gift without breaking the bank! This fantastic idea comes from my friend Angela at www.YourPersonalPoster.com another great site you really do need to check out for your holiday shopping!:

"Daedalus Books is a great source for the readers on your list. They send out a catalog that is filled with wonderful books sometimes for as little as $4. And they are good quality interesting books, not second runs or low quality junk. One year, they had these mini black velvet art kits where you got everything you needed to make your own small black velvet art piece. I got a dozen of them, because I have always joked in my family that I wanted to open a museum dedicated to Black Velvet Art (long story!). Gave them to my family members along with an invitation to be the first exhibitors at the museum when it opened. Everyone got a laugh out of it!"

Thanks so much Angela! Anyone else out there that would like to share their ideas?

Gifts that Money Can Not Buy...

The Women's Expo is finally over and I certainly left with much more than I came with! I'm not talking merchandise, I'm talking friends! Having worked in a nonprofit environment most of my life, today I was blessed with hundreds of smiles, hugs, and words of encouragement from some very savvy business women and visitors throughout the two-day event. I had forgotten how important and fun it is to network with passionate ladies... It's not like I can call up another "giveologist or gift therapist" to ask their advice! And to be able to share some of my money saving strategies to the audience was an experience I could have never prepared for! On day one the audience was full with standing room only! Folks were nodding their heads in agreement, laughing at my sarcastic humor, and wide-eyed with my grande finale...Wow! These folks were tuned in and eager to learn. What an honor for me! So now that the event is over, I am going to relax, enjoy the night off and give thanks for all the gifts that I have received...all of which were totally FREE!
  • Smiles from a stranger
  • Encouragement from friends
  • Gratitude from others
  • Hugs for a job well done
  • Committment from the ones you love
  • The strength to believe in something much bigger than yourself

Go ahead...pay it forward! Happy Giving!

Watch the Gift Therapist in Action!

Today I had a few spare moments and decided to capture some of my best advice and gift giving skills on video. Since most of you won't be able to see me "live" at the Women's Expo, here is a short video that we taped in the comfort of my own home that will teach you how to hone your own giveology skills! I plan on doing many more...this one was taped in just one take, so please excuse the little flubs and pitter patter of puppy feet...LOL! I was in "just do it" mode today because I realize this information really needs to be made available to everyone...now more than ever! Please let me know what you think and I'll do my best to make more videos based on what you'd like to learn! This is so much fun!!!

The Best Gifts for Teen Girls

Teen girls can be very tough to buy for, that's for sure! When in doubt, I usually opt to purchase some girly bath and body products, funky jammies or cool stationary products. Today while on a shopping mission for the Expo this weekend, I found an awesome and totally cute nightshirt on the clearance rack at Peebles for only $5! It retailed for $40...now that's what I'm talking about! I have a trendy teen in mind, who I know will just love it! Check out the video below for more great ideas for the teen diva on your list this year. Click on the Gift Therapist Badge to watch!

The Gift of Truth

Oh how I love Maya Angelou...she's on Oprah right now and I couldn't wait to share this nugget of wisdom with all of you. It literally stopped me in my tracks. In her new book, "Letter to My Daughter" Ms. Angelou shares her wisdom and prose with the intention to lift us up and stand tall as proud women. She does this by focusing on truth. She stresses by telling each other the truth, we are showing people how much we care about them. Even when it's hard to hear. I remember watching Randy Pausch's "Last Lecture" and his number one rule to live by was "Always tell the truth..." He also quipped that when people begin telling you what you want to hear, "that means they have given up on you". How many times have you listened to a friend complain about about a situation but hesitated to give her honest advice because you knew she wouldn't listen you? Next time, go on record! Tell the truth anyway...never give up on them! After all, isn't this what true friendship really is? Thoughts?

An Office Gift that Keeps on Giving

While I sit here and battle the flu, my body aches, but my mind keeps going a mile a minute! Between the sniffles and headache, an idea came to me that I think you all are going to love! Save money this year on co-worker gifts by giving an entire office gift! Fill a functional storage bin with all the comforts from home and create an "Office Survival Kit":
  • Kleenex (If I had a nickle for every time someone asked to "borrow a kleenex" ewwww!)
  • Cough Drops
  • Pain Relievers
  • Hair Spray
  • Breath Mints
  • Blank Note Cards
  • Random Office Supplies
  • Wrapped Candies
  • Hand Lotion
  • Band Aid
  • Cold Remedies
  • Tea Bags
  • Chicken Soup Packets or Microwave Ready Cups
  • Safety Pins

I know this sounds like a lot of stuff, but adjust to the size and needs of your co-workers. I know for a fact you could get all of the above for well under $20. Sure beats spending $10 on each person or worse...spend less and look like a cheapskate:) Most of these items you can find at your local dollar store or on clearance at you local office supply store. I know I'm forgetting something, but my brain is still a bit foggy from the cold meds...what else should we throw in???

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I would like to introduce you to a very special lady who has fought her way to defeat the disease. With style, grace and lots of humor, Leslie Haywood didn't let the "Big C" get in her way of entrepreneurial success. As a matter of fact, it fueled her success.

As of today, the fight to find a cure just got a little more help. Leslie Haywood is founder and president of Charmed Life Products and inventor of Grill Charm(tm) (A fantastic gift idea for just about any occasion). She is also a survivor. Her first introduction to breast cancer was at the age of 16 when her parents broke the news to her and her 2 younger sisters that their 30-something year old mother had Stage IV breast cancer. It was only after Leslie's own diagnosis at the age of 34, that she realized just how dire the situation had been. (Leslie's mom miraculously survived her stage IV diagnosis in 1989 and is Leslie's biggest fan) Leslie now has 2 daughters of her own who are now 5 and 3. Her fear is that the genetic legacy that she has potentially left for her daughters leaves only about 25 years to find a cure. With the launch of The Pink Collection, 10% of the proceeds from the sale of that collection will go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation whose mission is to "is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime...." For more on Leslie's story and her great gift item "Grill Charms" please visit http://www.grillcharms.com/pinkcollection.html
Happy Giving!
