Gift Planning for Mother's Day

In my neck of the woods, Easter is a pretty popular holiday. If you don't celebrate Easter, don't bypass the pastel drenched holiday isles at your favorite retail store just yet! While shopping today at Gabriel Brothers, I noticed a lot of Easter/spring merchandise that could easily double for Mother's Day gifts.

For example, pastel kitchen towels, aprons, table cloths, linens, scented candles all lined up all together in the Easter merchandise. Of course these items will go on sale right after the holiday, but I would shop now for the best selection!

If you are giving a gift card to mom this year, pick up a small item or two that compliments the type of gift card you are giving. Just shave $5 off of the value of the gift card and scour the clearance racks for one or two small gifts to go with...this technique will make your gift more thoughtful and memorable. After all...isn't mom worth it?

You will learn everything you need to know about how to coupon effectively and keep up on deals of the week at select stores including Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, and many more. I heard a rumor that Giant Eagle will soon be added to the list so hang tight for that!

For everything fashion, you can't beat my friend Aly's bargainista blog over at splendidcity called Shopaholics Daily. Aly Walansky is on top of virtually every sale with lightening speed, so be sure to subscribe to her feed. Many of the sales are so great that they sell out quickly, so tune in here for the best deals on the coolest fashions.

Holiday Stress Got You Down? Snap Out of It!

Today marks one week until Christmas--how did that happen so quickly? If I'm asking that question, I'm sure you are, too. Truth be told, rather than enjoying the holiday season, most people are frazzled and overwhelmed...too stressed out to really enjoy the true meaning of the season. Here are a few tips to help keep this time of year in perspective and enjoy the company of the people you love the most!

1. STOP, DROP and BREATHE: If you are feeling like you are going to have a stroke because you have too much to do with too little time, just stop! Sit down and focus on the experiences that mean most to you over the holiday. Breath deeply and focus on the positive. You don't have to do it all! Rethink you holiday traditions and decide to make the most of what resources you do have...the love and companionship of family and friends. A gathering with cheese and crackers is no different than one with prime rib when you have the right people sitting at your table. Take some pressure off of yourself...you deserve it!

2. JUST SAY NO: Don't overcommit yourself this holiday season. Decide right now how you are going to spend Christmas weekend and make sure to carve in some quality time for your immediate family. If you are frazzled, they are frazzled. And that is not really a holiday, right? Sit down as a family and make a schedule that you can all look forward to. Ease your guilt by scheduling visits after the holiday has passed. Then get on the horn and do it!

3. CHOOSE LIFE: In the grand scheme of things, holiday planning is not a matter of life and death. Focus on what you can do to make the holiday brighter and more memorable rather than the need to please everyone and keep up with the Joneses. Give yourself permission not to be perfect and design a holiday with traditions that you will look forward to and put the joy back into holiday celebrations.

It's go time, folks! We are in the thick of the holiday giving season and I'd love to make your gift giving a bit easier by sharing some tips to make your "gift of three" stand out among the crowd! The foundation of the "gift of three" strategy is to choose a central gift that will be the main focus of the gift and two smaller items that will pull the theme together. Remember...you are giving an experience. When you choose three items, the gift will "speak" that experience with little explanation necessary. Make sense? Good! Let's talk about open boxed items for a minute. Just because the box is a bit dinged up doesn't mean that you can't give it as a gift. Last year I found a beautiful (and cheap!) set of brandy snifters made by Waterford on the clearance rack for $7--no, I am not forgetting a zero. I took the snifters out of the box and made a gift basket that also included box of gourmet chocolates and bottle of Grand Marnier. This basket would normally retail for over $250, but I paid under $50 for the whole thing. Cheapskate gift? I think not...What do you think?

The Screaming Pillow: The Story

Sometimes when reviewing products I stumble upon a real gem. When introduced to the Screaming Pillow I immediately loved it. Being a therapist in a past life reminded me of the importance of letting out frustations in a fun and therapeutic way and this product really fit the bill. But behind the product is a great story, as inventor Gabrielle Yetter explains on her website:

"The Screaming Pillow was created after my sister, Katy Langaas, and her three-month-old baby, Sven, were killed in a car accident in South Africa.

Our mother, Colette Said, began receiving emotional support from The Compassionate Friends, a worldwide bereavement organization, whose counselors suggested she scream into a pillow to let out her emotions.

Black Friday Shopping Tips

If you are a Black Friday shopper you'll want to take the following steps to prepare for the largest shopping day of the year! Get out your track suit and comfy clothes...it's time to get organized!

1. Get organized! Clean out your wallet to include only the cash,
credit cards and photo identification that you will need to make your purchases. Leave all unnecessary items at home to lighten your load, resist the urge to overspend, and protect against loss or identity theft. Creating a separate shopping wallet is a simple and effective way to keep your lists, cash, cards, and receipts organized throughout the holiday shopping season.

2. Play it safe! Keep a detailed list of the credit/debit cards that
you keep in your shopping wallet in a safe place at your home. Be sure to
include the card name, account number and customer service phone number. Should you lose your wallet or have it stolen, having quick access to this information will save you valuable time and stress should this unfortunate experience happen to you.

3. Pack a snack! The old rule "never go shopping hungry" still rings
true, especially while holiday shopping. During a long day of shopping,
keep your blood glucose balanced by nibbling on a granola snacks, protein bar, or homemade trail mix. These are healthy and filling treats that will boost your stamina, mood, and budget!

4. Dress for success! Minimize your morning primping and select your most comfortable clothes and sneakers to get the job done! Leave your
bulky coat in the car and rely on a fleece pull-over or hoodie to shield you during your long walk to and from the parking lot. You can always tie your hoodie around your waist later and still have two hands to manage all of your shopping bags!

5. Prioritize your list and shop backwards! Buy the small gifts first and big gifts last. Find great bargains by taking 10 minutes to browse the clearance racks first. Challenge yourself to come in under budget. Applying your savings toward the bigger purchases on your list, next year's gift budget or your favorite charity!

Looking Beyond the Bear

While shopping in Goodwill today, I remembered a slick technique that can be used to make a practical gift quite fun. Remember the good old fashioned teddy bear? Well, this little fellow is sure to bring a smile to the recipients face when you give the following items:

Winter Gift Set: Put the hat on his head, the gloves on his paws and tie the scarf around his neck. Too cute!

Romantic Gift: Place the bracelet or necklace on the bear. Just be sure to secure it in some way so it doesn't fall off into the bottom of the gift bag! A straight pin will usually do the trick.

Gift Cards or Gift Certificates: Place the gift card inside an envelope. Be sure to poke a hole through one corner before placing the gift card inside. Thread curly ribbon through the hole, leaving enough slack to tie it around the Teddy Bear's neck. This technique also works very well for fundraisers, auctions or raffles. It really gets the gift card noticed!

I always visit Goodwill stores first when purchasing stuffed animals to use for this purpose. I only paid $3.99 for him and he was in pristine condition....new with tags! If you can't find a new bear, be sure to stock up on them at the end of the holiday season and store them away for future gift giving occasions. They really do come in handy and bring a smile to the recipients face!

Savory Hostess Gifts Under $20

First of all, please excuse the picture quality! My camera battery is dead and wanted to get a shot of this before I actually give this gift tonight! Using the "Gift of Three" strategy, I put together this little gift basket from my stash of goodies in my gift giving pantry. I have been stashing premade edible gifts and mixes in the event an unexpected party comes up and I just don't have the time to make something. Here is a super gift that I put together for a grand total of $16.79. The basket includes:

Gourmet Olive Oil for $6.99
Tastefully Simple Tuscan Sundried Tomatoe Dip Mix for $8.99
A mini-loaf of Italian bread (it's fresh...I picked that up today!) for $.79

My guess it that we'll probably tear into the basket tonight because it has everything you need for a fun appetizer. Who doesn't love fresh bread and a savory dip? It's all here! Of course you can save even more money if you whip up a dried dip mix (recipe here) and loaf of bread yourself, but we all know that sometimes this just isn't practical. But if you plan ahead, the only out of pocket cost could be the olive oil...it's your choice!

But today at TJ Maxx I was inspired by these beautifully monogrammed washcloths that rang in at a mere $7.99 for a set of eight! This is a perfect example of a central gift for your "Gift of Three" strategy. What else could you give in addition to the washcloths that would really make this gift pop? Surviving the Holidays: Simple Tips to Save Your Sanity

Today we kicked off the holiday season with a shopping fundraiser to benefit our local senior center. Although we had a great crowd and sales were good, I have to admit I heard a bit of rumbling--"It's too early to think about Christmas...it's not even Thanksgiving yet!"...I completely disagree, and this is why...

Much of the stress of the holidays is caused by procrastination and the lack of planning. The holiday season spans much more than one day, folks! The earlier you begin to shop, entertaining friends, and exchange gifts the less stress you will have during peak season! Here are a few tips to help you rethink your holiday giving strategy and enjoy the season from this moment forward.

Sit down with your calendar and block off a few dates that you plan to have available to celebrate with extended family and friends. Get on the phone and coordinate a holiday visit, dinner, brunch, pot-luck or gift exchange (if applicable) as early as possible. Plan on exchanging any gifts on that date...even if it is next week!
Stressed financially? Now is the time to re-evaluate your gift list and set a firm budget. Rather than cross people off of your list, consider an affordable lunch or breakfast party where you can enjoy a delicious meal together...go out, or cook in! Creating a new holiday tradition can save you money and enrich your relationships for years to come!
Give holiday themed gifts BEFORE the peak holiday season! Examples include fresh evergreen wreaths, poinsettia plants, holiday centerpieces, and fashion accessories that can be enjoyed during the holiday festivities. Giving something with a holiday theme after peak season just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. To be very honest, the gift is most likely going directly into the attic or closet just to be forgotten until next year. Where is the fun in that?
Strapped for time? Never feel obligated to spread yourself so thin that you can't enjoy the holiday season! Remember your favorite childhood holiday memories and build your holiday schedule around what makes you and your immediate family happy. Schedule post-holiday visits with those you were unable to see after the New Year. It will give you both something to look forward to without the added stress!

The Office Survival Kit: Instead of buying individual gifts for everyone in the office, why not buy one large gift for your department or office mates instead? The office survival kit can contain anything that tends to always run in short supply. Be creative and have fun with the contents. Kleenex, paper clips, funky file folders, anti-bacterial hand gel, cough drops, aspirin, antacids...the sky is the limit! But don't spend a fortune! Set a reasonable budget and shop clearance racks, use coupons, and throw in new but unused items you may have in your supply closet. This gift will keep on giving well beyond the annual holiday office party, too!

The Office Splurge: Ask everyone to pitch in a portion of what they would normally spend on office gifts and buy a substantial gift that the entire office can use and enjoy! For example if ten people contribute $10 each, that $100 can be used to purchase a new microwave, deluxe coffee machine or perhaps a “donut day” once per month. (Sure beats the jelly of the month club)

Office Charity Challenge: Enlist the troops to create their own unique fundraising campaign during work time at the office. Participants must pay a $5 entry fee to be eligible to win the grand prize...half of the entry fees collected. The employee who raises the most $ for their favorite charity will be recognized at an office -wide holiday breakfast or luncheon (paid by the other half of the entry fees) where they may present their donation directly to representatives of their designated cause. A great way to celebrate the true meaning of the holiday season!

How to Give Great Gifts in a Bad Economy

The years of auto-pilot gift giving are now over. You know--buying gifts and not really paying attention to the price tag or genuine interests of the gift recipient. You found a decent gift, put it on your credit card, and just kept on spending what you didn't have until your gift list was complete. I remember those days all to well. When the bills rolled in during the month of January, I wanted to run and hide. What was I thinking? Yep...been there, done that. Never again!

Many of us (not all!) have all been guilty of this at one time or another. I always admired folks who would pull out their wallets and pay cash for things. Too bad I never felt that satisfaction until after I hit rock bottom and was forced to pay EVERYTHING with cash. It was tough, but I made it through--and learned a thing or two. For families who are facing this dilemma for the first time, I encourage you to see the gift in this valuable lesson. Accept the challenge to give more meaningful gifts (rather than expensive ones!) and watch the magic happen. It's a safe bet that not only will your gift giving skills improve, but the relationships that go along with them will improve as well. You can't put a price tag on that!

If you find yourself in a panic, don't fear! Before you run off to the mall, please consider the following gift giving truths:

Gift giving is optional! When it becomes an obligation in your mind, it is no longer a gift. Think about it and re-visit your gift list. Are you giving gifts in order to avoid conflict, keep up with the Jones's, or keep the family peace? Never put the needs or expectations of others ahead of your own financial stability. There is no shame in speaking your truth and changing the rules this year. Speak up now and make no apologies. For example..."Our family is not in the position to buy gifts for extended family this year, but would love to have you over for a pizza and movie night when it fits your schedule." See how easy that was?

Not all gifts are created equal. Be aware of what types of gifts are the most meaningful to important people on your gift list. Would your best friend prefer a sterling silver bracelet or a laid-back lunch at your favorite local cafe? Does your Grandmother really need an expensive gift set from Macy's or would she prefer an afternoon spent scrapbooking with you? If you don't know, ASK! You just might create a new tradition in the process.

Gift giving is about them, not you! How many times have you given a gift expecting rave reviews but in return you get a luke warm response? Odds are pretty good that you have probably violated this rule. Just because you would love to receive a cashmere sweater coat does not mean everyone else wants one too. Take the time to research and find out what really makes them tick and do your best to give a gift that reflects it. A $25 gift card to Macy's is a great gift if you know that your BFF is saving up for that "must have" leather jacket she's been talking about. Just jot a note in the card that will add meaning to giving the gift card--"Your are going to look great in that new leather jacket...hope this helps you make that big purchase!"

Great gifts come in many shapes, sizes, and price tags. But never forget that the very best gifts strengthen our personal connections with one another, never to weaken them. Buying an expensive gift that misses the mark can really do some damage and change the dynamic of your relationship if not careful. Just stop, think, plan, and do your best connect while minding your budget. I promise you, you'll never loose.

The Gift of Peace

The G20 is setting up shop here in Pittsburgh for the weekend and tensions seem to be running a bit high. With photos circulating from G20 London, the realities of an event of this magnitude are difficult to conceive. Our city will essentially be on a two-day lockdown, ensuring the safety for international dignitaries making their way to and from the convention center as well as residents and employees of the City of Pittsburgh. Yes, there will be a sea of protestors and increased police security along the motorcade route and throughout various locations surrounding the Pittsburgh area. Plenty of media will fill the streets and Pittsburgh will be on the international stage for all to see. But at what price? Let's hope it's not too costly. Money is one thing, safety and security for all involved is my primary concern.

I'm am hoping and praying for a very peaceful G20 summit in our beloved City of Pittsburgh. Won't you please take a moment of silence and send some positive thoughts our way...we would love to see this go on our record books as a great thing for Pittsburgh, without the violence and destruction that comes along with such a polarizing world event. Please pray for the health and safety of everyone involved, including the protestors who are passionate about having their voices heard. And for the public safety officials who will be monitoring this event to keep us all safe from harm. Thank you!

"We were invited to celebrate a 50th anniversary dinner for my husband's aunt and uncle...and the invite says "No gifts please..." Of course you know I'm going to show up with a gift anyways...any suggestions that you can solicit from your readers would be greatly appreciated. This couple is in their 70's, and live out in the country so they like simple things, the type of people who don't like to be fussed over... I thought about getting a nice looking tall plant in some kind of engraved pot with their anniversary date on it, or something like that....help!"

Make you gift list TODAY! Don't procrastinate on this...the longer you wait, the harder it will become to narrow your list down and set your budget accordingly.
Start thinking of appropriate gifts that you would like to give to each person on your list. Start jotting ideas down TODAY!
Are you scratching people off of your gift list this year? Now is the the time to have an honest conversation with them about some creative alternatives to tangible gift giving. Pick up the phone...TODAY!

The Golden Rule When Shopping

I received a surprise in my inbox this morning and it was just too good not to share with all of you! My friend Leann Junker writes:

"I have been thinking about smart shopping for a while now that I no longer work and we are trying to "float the boat" on one income. I have one tip that you might add to your web site or think about when you're helping others. (Unless this is already included in your tips and I missed it.) I always try to be nice when I deal with people at stores. I believe in the Golden Rule and want my children to see me set this good example, so I am always nice even if a sales clerk is rude to me. I believe that being nice has "paid off" on a number of occasions. I'm sure this is nothing short of divine intervention, but there have been some examples lately where someone has thrown in something extra or given me a special coupon or let me in on some helpful information simply because I was friendly. And in return I genuinely show a lot of gratitude because in my situation every little bit helps. "

Indeed, Leann...this is wonderful advice that many of us take for granted! A little kindness and a smile can go a long way! Over the years, I have built very strong relationships with several clerks at my favorite shopping haunts. Because I treat them with respect and have fun with the experience, I seriously believe they look forward to helping me. Long before I was the Gift Therapist, I worked in various retail positions during high school and college. It is NOT an easy job! I still remember the customers who made my day a little brighter or made those long hours seem worth it in the end! For example:

Journals, pencils, and colorful binders make great gifts for college students all year long! Swoop them up when you see them on the clearance rack!

Hoodies, jeans and screened t's are always a welcome gift for teens on your list. Take advantage of the huge sales in store and online.

Organizational products like desk cubes, designer paper clips, and funky file folders make great gifts for colleagues at the office. Stock up now and give the entire office a giant basket to share as a holiday gift!

How to Give the Perfect Gift

A good friend and colleague of mine recently introduced me to a wonderful and inspiring book that seeks to help couples enhance their relationships by examining the various "love languages" that people often use to express their love and gratitude for one another. After reading "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman, I had what Oprah would call an "Ah-ha" moment and quickly realized that these principles also apply to gift giving...as giving tangible gifts is identified as a love language in and of itself! What are the 5 languages and how do they apply? Lets look at the languages, first:

1. Words of Affirmation
2. Quality Time
3. Receiving Gifts
4. Acts of Service
5. Physical Touch

What love language do you speak? How do you show appreciation to people around you? Because we as humans tend to project our needs and desires onto others, the way we choose to give (and what gifts we tend to give) are usually reflective of the needs or affirmations we seek for ourselves...What we tend to "give" is a clear indicator or what we "desire". Ok...therapist hat off...

How does this relate to gift giving? It actually impacts successful gift giving in a major way. I believe it's safe to say that if you are reading this blog, you are very interested in giving "the perfect gift" to someone you love, which requires creativity, inspiration, and often times a lot of thought. By paying attention to the RECIPIENTS love language, you can pretty much ensure that your gift will be wanted, appreciated and a big hit. Never assume that because you prefer to receive tangible gifts that the recipient does so as well...they may have a completely different love language! Can you see how this relates to couples but also relates to showing our love to the world around us?

Times are tough and the holiday gift giving season is getting closer. What to do? Start planning your holiday giving now. Note that I said giving rather than shopping! Yes, we must factor shopping into the equation, but for now let's just concentrate on creating a strategic giving plan. It sounds so technical doesn't it? Don't fear...it's actually quite simple. But you need to start now and get your ducks (and dollars) in a row as soon as possible!

Here are are five tips that can help you plan for your holiday giving now and reduce the stress associated with giving the perfect gift:

* Set your holiday budget right now! Divide that number by 4 and figure out your monthly gift budget in cash. Can't aford your monthly total? REDUCE YOUR BUDGET!

* Create a holiday folder. I recommend a three ring binder with pocket inserts. Create sections that include Gift Lists, Budget, Receipts, and Recipes (more on recipes later!). Make out your gift list as soon as possible.

* Prioritize your gift list and begin shopping from bottom to top. I like to say "shop backwards." For example, if you have people on your list that you normally buy a small gift for each year, shop for them first. Challenge yourself to come in under budget on these folks. You can do this easily by following my "Gift of Three" strategy.

* Start shopping for smalle gifts all year long. While you are at the mall or your favorite discount department stores, keep your eyes peeled on the clearance racks. This is where you will find the best bargains on off season merchandise that would make a great birthday, holiday, or thank you gift. Stash in a gift closet or bin for easy access!

* Reduce you spending and increase your thoughtfulness by giving the gift of food! Again, using the Gift of Three Strategy, you can save a ton of money while looking like a gift hero! Choose your favorite recipe and prepare it in a sleek serving container that the hostess can keep. Attach the recipe, a recipe book, or serving utensil to tie the theme together. When I was a little girl, my cousin Diane and I used to play dress-up all of the time. So much so, we decided to go trick or treating one day mid-summer just for the fun of it. Our neighbors were very good sports but our parents were mortified! Why would we ever consider doing such a crazy thing? We did it because it was spontaneous and fun...period. Our parents didn't embrace our explanation one bit. I believe I may have been grounded for it...LOL! But remembering their response led me to writing this post...have we become a society immune to celebrating holidays? And if so, why?

As the Gift Therapist, I receive tons of emails asking for gift giving help. Sometimes I receive long rants (I love to get those!) explaining why they feel compelled to buy a gift for someone they barely know or do not like...those really crack me up! But seriously....when did we become so neutral or angry about holiday celebrations?

I realize that not everyone feels this way...but I am hearing enough gruff that makes me wonder how and why all of this negativity is suddenly bubbling to the surface. I have some ideas that I would like to share with you as well as some potential solutions.

Reason #1: Holidays celebrations are usually centralized around the family unit. Since my Grandmother's generation, our family has been progressively shrinking and the traditions are slowly fading. Remembering how great things "used to be" can evoke depressing thoughts, thus creating a thin veil of stress over the holiday celebration...i.e. "Christmas will never be the same with Granny."

Reason #2: Families are much busier and stretched too thin. Increased work demands and two parent working households are now the norm. Who is going to have the time, energy and desire to pull it all together? Feeling the need to do it all, and the guilt of not wanting to do it all is very stressful...

Reason #3: Families are much more extended. Divorce, separation, step-families and step-children add even more stress to the mix. How many families can you reasonably visit (and enjoy visiting) in one day? And how do you set boundaries or allocate your time without hurting some one's feelings? Virtually impossible, yet we strive to do it all and dreading it...Even more stress...

Reason #4: Someone decided that tangible gifts were necessary to commemorate every holiday and special occasion and we bought into hook, line, and sinker. Well, some of us did...and are paying for it now with credit card debt or just plain old overspending for no reason at all. Did we really think that a tangible gift could really be a substitute for something simple, appropriate, and thoughtful? But some of us fell into this time saving (and money gobbling) trap just to cross that person off of our gift list...and now we can't afford to do that anymore...how do we explain that we will be cutting back this year?...Even more stress!

Reason #5: We are just plain bored with holidays due to one or more of the reasons listed above. We've conditioned ourselves through the law of diminishing returns...after a few years of holiday related stress syndrome, we just become numb...or worse, we check out completely. What used to be manageable has now become avoidable...holiday? What holiday?

Does this sound like you? Can you relate? I certainly can...been there, done that! Here are some things that I have done to bring back the joy and eliminate some of the stress that a holiday celebration can bring:

I choose to celebrate with people who I have close relationships with and enjoy celebrating with. I no longer feel compelled to accept invitations from people who don't communicate with us on a regular basis. If you're not calling just to say "hi" or asking us to meet up for coffee date throughout the year, odds are you are not going to see us the "day of" a primary holiday...sorry...but I may buy you a small gift and deliver it to you at a later or earlier date out of respect for familie ties.
I don't follow the rules...except for the golden rule, which I live and give by. I give what I can, when I can. I put as much thought into making both the holiday and gift giving fun for those who choose to celebrate with me. That strategy alone can work wonders for you!
I look forward to creating my own traditions and holiday celebrations. I know that I can never recreate the past but I can certainly build from it! I think my parents were wrong when they punished me for my 'trick or treating in July" caper...it was fun, creative and memorable....even 30 years later.

The Gift of Time: This year, we are spending Father's Day at a local racetrack and casino with my Father. Why? Because he just loves to go there! At 74 years old, I have learned over the years that another tie, tshirt, or coffee mug is just going to gather dust! Do something together as a family...cook his favorite meal, visit his favorite hangout or take in a ball game together. Make sure he knows this day is all about him and you'll hit a home run!

The Gift of Green: Is your Dad an outdoors man? Does he like to spend time puttering in the garden? Visit your local nursery and pick up some greens and tools that you can plant together as a family and watch the memories grow!

The Gift of Art: Handmade items from the little ones are always welcome and appreciated, especially if Dad is a great sport! Create a family night with a gallery theme and showcase all the love for Dad displayed strategically throughout your home. Leave no room untouched and include some handmade pieces of art from Mommy, too!

The Gift of Food: You knew I couldn't resist this one! Prepare Dad's favorite meal or send his favorite culinary indulgence across the miles. With hundreds of "of the month" clubs out there, you are sure to find a club that matches his taste! (I would personally skip the jelly of the month club, though...LOL) When in doubt, I go with Omaha Steaks....this is what my Dad will be getting this year...Bacon Wrapped Fillet Mignon ...

Product Review: The Hana Mini Flat Iron ROCKS!

I was skeptical yet excited when I received my new flat iron in the mail a few days ago. I just returned from a wonderful vacation in Cabo San Lucas and my hair was completely trashed from a seven day dose of tropical sun, salt water, and chlorine from a fairytale life of luxury...LOL. Before I tried my Hana Nano Mini, I had pretty much given up on flat irons. Although my hair is short, it is thick with a very funky wave that drives me insane!!! I am extremely happy to say that the Nano Mini blew my expectations out of the water...after ten minutes of use, my hair was perfectly straight, smooth as silk, and completely frizz free...FINALLY! I love this compact version (retail $70), but will definitely look into the full sized version as well because that should speed up the straightening process even more!!! My only complaint about the Hana Mini is that I received it too late...it would have been perfect to take with me on vacation!

She's also in school for her second master's degree so she's running low on spare time. She's 50+ years old and has 3 grand kids, but she's not into wearing anything that says "Grandma". Any suggestions for something under $40.00?"

At first glance, I would ask you what types of gifts does your mom normally give you? This is often a great clue to the types of gifts that she would like to receive! That being said, focus on an experience that your would like to give to you mom and build a theme around it! Instead of a tangible gift, could you take her and the kids out for ice cream or prepare her favorite meal? If she is pinched for time, perhaps a gift certificate to her favorite hair salon with some small pampering essentials that she can do in the comfort of her own home? If you want to go with a "school theme" would she appreciate a roomy but trendy tote bag to lug her gear or a comfy lap desk for her to use while she lounges with the family?

Gifts from the kitchen always make a great gift but few folks feel confident enough to explore this popular and frugal gift outside of their own family. I have recently begun posting to a new blog that is dedicated to food gifts that are super simple, budget friendly, and a proven hit with my friends and family. Tuesday evening I had the honor of being the MC for the Annual Salvation Army Award Dinner in Monessen, Pennsylvania. It was a lovely evening filled with a lot of positive energy and amazing people. One of the distinguished guest and honorees was Albert Lexie. I have known Albert for years and am humbled each time I am in his presence. Albert has spent the last 20 years shining shoes for charity. He travels daily to Oakland where he sets up shop at Children's Hospital and goes to work, donating all of his tips to the Patient Care Fund. Known as "Albert's Kid's," he has raised over $100,000 for this amazing cause. But there is a bigger story here. Albert is developmentally challenged and lives on only $10,000 per year....and he is such a happy man! His smile will melt your heart if you ever get the opportunity to meet him. It reminds me of when I was young and money really didn't mean all that much. Remember when your family, friends, and perhaps a trip to the Dairy Queen were all you needed to have a great day? That's how Albert lives his life, except the Dairy Queen trip is replaced with service to the less fortunate. Albert's efforts have not gone unnoticed...he was honored b Oprah Winfrey a few years ago for his incredible passion to serve the profoundly ill at Children's Hospital. Congratulations, Albert! Thank you for being a fantastic role model and inspiration to us all. May all of your dreams come true!

A Monday Morning Lifesaver: Shower Shock Caffeinated Soap

Don't laugh...but I am beginning to panic because I am running low on my Shower Shock supply. I don't know about you ladies, but I am ready for some consistently warm weather! This 40 degree rainy weather is really working on my last nerve! In between appointments today (that means connecting with new and old friends~) I decided to take in a little retail therapy at our local Gabriel Brothers and check out the giant toy sale they have going on...the place was packed! I got diverted by the crowd and wound up in front of a display unit filled with beautiful sandals from Ann Taylor Loft. I am a sucker for great shoes, especially those that sing "summer is coming!"...These lovely gold and silver metallic flats immediately caught my eye, and guess what? They were my size...gotta love that when that happens. It's like a sign from God telling me to go ahead and treat myself to a special gift...that I deserve it :) No problem taking Him up on that offer! They were only $4.99...JACKPOT! Many styles and colors are still available, but I warn you they will go fast! Now go get your spring fix on..you deserve it!

One of the happiest and memorable experiences of my life was choosing the song list for my wedding. Both my husband and I have a passion for music and we spent weeks researching and compiling only the best music for our special day. It reminded me of the early 80's when I would make mix tape after mix tape...all with different themes to celebrate different occasions. The music spoke to me then and does still to this day :) With computers, color printers, and digital music, now we can make great gifts right from our desktop in just a few clicks of the mouse. I'm loving that! And to capture memories in the form of song and pass them along to someone special is priceless...really! Very little from the wallet, but a ton from the heart!

Dear President Obama...Give it to the people!

How much money would it take to solve the current economic crisis? How much money would it take RIGHT NOW to help thousands of people keep their homes, pay for health insurance, and have enough money to feed their children while they search for a new job? So far, the government has not even broached that subject and I am a bit disheartened that "Joe Plumber" who once was a priority now seems to be an afterthought...just sayin'!

The current economic stimulus package is up to 900 billion dollars. Although not passed yet, both sides agree that any job creation would not materialize for at least 1-2 years. Having worked in the nonprofit sector that often relies on government grants (can you say beauracracy?) I can almost guarantee that any efforts to revitalize the economy contained within the economic stimulus package are not going to trickle down in enough time to save homes, save current jobs, or fund any new programs to immediately assist families in need. I am not being pessimistic...I am being realistic. I am scared. And I don't think I am alone.

Not only do Americans need jobs, we need jobs that pay a living wage. Generating an abundance of minimum wage jobs is not going to solve the problem, even in the long run. What are the American working class people going to do NOW to survive and maintain a reasonable quality of life for themselves and their children?

If our government can come up with 900 billion dollars to fund ideas that may or may not work, I think it's fair for us as American citizens to request an insurance policy. Since the stimulus policy will ultimately come out of our pockets (and our children's), I think it's fair to request a very large stimulus package now so that we may "get by" while all of the grand ideas are being decided and implemented. Something in the five digit range should suffice, don't you think? Some will save, some will spend, and some will give...now that's what I call a stimulus package. We just need a little wiggle room while the big corporations and big government finally realize that investing DIRECTLY into the pockets of American citizens is the wisest and most necessary choice of all.

So please, President Obama...Give it to the people! FAST!

Anyone out there with me? If so, please write your state and local political leaders and demand that the stimulus package must include provisions that will help American families IMMEDIATELY. Who knows, we just may make a difference :)

BUT...we can't do it without out YOU! Major changes are in the air for 2009 and we now have the unique opportunity to become part of the monumental movement for change. I think it's fair to say that most of know this change will not happen overnight, or next year. It will be a slow, steady, and comprehensive process that is in desperate need of our support and engagement. Unemployment numbers are going up and basic family needs will be under great stress. As individuals we may not be able to jump in and solve the financial crisis, but we can step up and help a family in need. Here are a few things that you can do today and support our new president in the quest for positive change:

Donate non-perishable items to your local foodbank or church food pantry. If you have the means, please share the wealth. It is unconscionable for any child to go hungry in the United States of America.
Cook a warm meal and deliver it to a friend or family in need. Ask them to pay the favor forward when they get back on track.
Be a good friend to someone in crisis. Odds are that we all know someone who has been hit hard by a lay-off, family illness, or critical loss. Make the effort to connect, support, and become an ongoing source of inspiration. Listen and pray together...and most importantly, just be accessible and genuine.
Clean out your closet and donate your gently worn items to your local Salvation Army, domestic violence or local homeless shelter. They will make sure your donations get to the needy. A warm coat, clean blanket, or flannel pajamas can make a big difference to a family in crisis.
Offer support to a single-mom in need. Offer transportation to job interviews, doctor's appointments, or grocery store trips. Can you babysit while mom is pursuing higher education or away on a critical job interview?

How are you going to be part of the change? President Obama can not do it alone...our local government can not do it alone...none of us can do it alone. We all need each other to from time to time so why not start right now in our own community? Good luck and Happy GIVING!!!

Another Year Wiser: A Birthday Re-cap

Although being the Gift Therapist is the best job on the planet, receiving gifts is and always has been very tough for me. Yesterday I celebrated my 38th birthday and I can't begin to quantify the generosity of all of my family, friends and colleagues. Yes indeed, it was a very humbling experience! I can't imagine the stress they were all under. I mean, having to give a gift to the Gift Therapist could be a very daunting task, I imagine :) But everyone nailed it this year and I received some really awesome presents. Here are some of the gifts that I received and why they were so awesome....

"The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch: The most inspiring lecture that I've ever heard. I must have watched it at least ten times. Now I have the hard copy!
"The Snuggie": I've been joking about it for months and now I have one! Because I am always cold, this was the perfect gift for me!
A $50 pre-paid Visa: I'm a big fan of receiving gift cards...now I can go buy that awesome new wool coat that I've been eyeing up for months now...an now it's on sale!
A romantic dinner with my husband: Fine dining is one of my favorite hobbies, especially with people that I love! Dinner at my favorite restaurant is always a home run!
Emails and e-cards from my long distance friends: It's always humbling for me to receive kind wishes across the miles from folks who actually remembered it was my birthday. It really is the thought that counts!

A Saturday Shopping Spree

Today my husband and I took off on an impromptu shopping spree to look for a new comfy chair for our living room. Somehow we got sidetracked and wound up in Barnes and Noble (one of my favorite stores) and spent a relaxing afternoon browsing the bargain books and new releases. I'm not a fan of mean girls. For most of my junior high career (many moons ago!) I was bullied, teased and tried so very hard to fit in. If I would dare to post a picture of me back then you would understand why! Those times were very tough, but I had great friends and family to help me through it successfully. Today I sit here at my desk in awe...so many many fabulous friends with very generous hearts. Some old, some new...but tons of good karma all the way around. One of the best pieces of advice that I ever received was "hang out with people that you want to be like...their success and passion will be contageous." And I try to live each day surrounded primarily by positive influences that keep me grounded, focused, and grateful for being alive and being able to do what I do. Karma is all about reciprocity...what you put out into the world will come back to you ten fold, good or bad. So why not start planting the seeds of generosity and watch those seeds grow...both for your friends, co-workers, family, and the entire world? I promise you will be amazed at the results!

I hope this post finds everyone enjoying the holiday giving season. I still have to pinch myself when I think of all the wonderful blessings that 2008 has brought to me and my family. I hope you all have been blessed as well and have an ever better 2009! Here are just a few tips to ensure that you start off 2009 in the black and begin your smart shopping for an entire year of gift giving with a solid plan and strategy!

Establish an annual gift budget in addition to your annual household budget. Set up a separate debit card account that you can deposit into regularly throughout the year so you can snag up great bargains when you see them without the guilt or stress!
Eliminate the evidence! Never put boxes that contained high ticket items out for the trash. Doing so is an invitation to get robbed! Either break the boxes down or take them to a dumpster off-site to ensure your family safety.
Snag up on the post holiday sales right now and get your pick of holiday cards, wrapping, bags, and decor at a minimum of 50% off. Selection is best right now, so stock up now on red, silver, and gold wrapping, bags and tags that are multi-seasonal and can be used for all occasion gift giving.
Use gift cards from obscure shops and retailers ASAP just in case they close their doors in 2009. I wouldn't worry too much about the bigger retail chains, but play it safe and use the cards and treat yourself to a shopping spree now!
Organize your gift closet. Clean out the gifts that you know you'll never give, including some of the awful gifts that you may have received this year that didn't come with a gift receipt. Donate them to your favorite charity or Goodwill store. Make room for up to date and dazzling items that you find on the clearance racks now for great gift giving later.
Send Happy New Year Cards to folks who didn't make your holiday gift list. Surprise them with a heartfelt 2009 greeting.

Get your 42 Cents Worth

If you are planning to send holiday cards this year take heed of the following advice...a greeting card can be a real gift if you just put some thought into it! How many times have you received a holiday card (or special occasion card) with only the signature of the person who sent it to you? Don't even get me started on the pre-printed ones with a laser printed signature. How do you feel about that? I don't know about you, but when I receive a card like that, it kinda hurts my feelings sometimes, especially from people that I haven't connected with in awhile. (I'll let my mom and in-laws slide! We communicate quite regularly.) In my minds eye I can see them sitting at the table in front of an assembly line of pre-addressed labels, stamps, and stack of cards just awaiting to be autographed...Thanks for adding me to your fan club...LOL! But seriously, I do appreciate the thought but would much prefer a quick phone call or email instead :) So take note...GIVE MORE this year by adding a personal note to your card. As about them and their family...try not to focus on you! Try these conversation starters if you draw a blank:

The Gift of Survival

I love to receive great gift ideas from my readers! Today, my friend and loyal Bargain Zone member Angela Watson from www.yourpersonalposter.com sends the following tip:

"Hi Jen,

I just remembered another gift that is relatively inexpensive that I gave my neighbors last year for Christmas. Here in S. California we live under the spectre of earthquakes constantly. So I bought some small red insulated lunch bags shaped roughly like a cube, and bought some survival items to put in them, including:

a couple of glow sticks (snap them and provide light for several hours)
hard granola bars & beef jerky (long shelf life)
a whistle
a small pre-made first aid kit
a bottle of water (rotate it about once a month or so)
a disposable face mask (to not breathe the dust)

Then I also gave them a special wrench that is specifically for turning off your gas at the meter. Total cost, less than $25 bucks (and I didn't even shop at Wal-Mart [Mall-Wart]!). I gave one each to my grandparents, my mom, my neighbors on either side of me and a couple of other family and friends.

Something like this could be adapted to be a blizzard, tornado or hurricane kit, depending on your area of the country."

This survival theme can translate to virtually any "sticky" situation and now many manufacturers are catching on. If you have the time and creativity, definitely put one together yourself and save a ton of cash. If not, look for pre-made kits at your local discount department store. I've done survival kits for the office, girl's night out, and new mom's. What are you ideas?

When to Buy Restaurant Certificates

Research, research, and do more research before you buy restaurant certificates through online outlets such as restaurant.com. Whether or not to buy them is entirely up to how and when you plan on using them. Overall, I really believe they are a great bargain for the average couple who enjoys dining out, but how do these certificates fare in the gift giving world? Here are some helpful tips:

Before you take the leap and make a purchase, be sure to research first. Most, if not all of the restaurants require a minimum order or total that must be spent. For example, in order to use your $100 gift certificate, you must spend $200. The best deal so far is the $25 certificate that can be used on the purchasing of two entrees or total bill of $35. Be careful, some restaurants only allow you to use these gift certificates during the week, so be sure to look at the restrictions for each restaurant before you buy!

Would I purchase these as a gift? Probably not. Seems a little tacky to gift a gift with such heavy restrictions. If the recipient isn't aware of them, they will likely be embarassed if they have to fork out extra money because they didn't read the fine print. This makes you look really bad as well! I may consider purchasing one for someone that I know really well and frequents a certain restaurant on the list. But I would be very clear on how it can be used with them before they actually go there.

Would I buy restaurant gift certificates? Absolutely! My husband and I love to dine out and try new places. This is a wonderful discount if you plan on spending at least $15-20 on a meal. Remember the $25 gift certificate usually requires a purchase of $35, so add in tax and tip and that should take you up to about $20-25. Can't get away with a total like that at Eat'n Park anymore!
